£3 billion investment in buses?

The Government have unveiled a new bus strategy with £3 billion investments. The UK Government has announced a raft of measures to improve the country’s bus infrastructure, including funding for rural services, reports Intelligent Transport. Separately, Sustainable Bus report that 4,000 new electric or hydrogen buses are part of the strategy. However all of this will depend on how and when the existing diesel buses are phased out. A consultation has been launched on when the ending of sales of new diesel buses should be – find out more here.

The Government promise a “bus strategy to see passengers across England benefiting from more frequent, reliable, easier to use and cheaper bus services”. But how much will trickle down to rural areas is yet to be revealed! So far, grants to local rural councils exclude the South Downs area.
